New Process for Mast Stepping

For the safety of all people involved, and in order to make the process of raising masts more efficient, the Board has put in place a new system for use of the Mast Crane.

A certified mast crane officer must be present to unlock and operate the crane. The club will coordinate having an officer present for each scheduled event.

When you register for as session, you will need to provide the names of two people who will accompany you. If you do not have two people with you, it will not be possible to step your mast.

Here is a readiness checklist for stepping your mast:

  • My motor has been installed and tested and my gas tank is onboard my boat
  • My mast has been located
  • Any hardware for mast top (i.e. wind vane) is ready to be installed and is on boat
  • Any hardware required for mast stepping (thru-bolts, nuts, washers, rubber mast sleeve) are accessible and on boat
  • All turnbuckles have been fastened to chain plates or mast and appropriately loosened.
  • Each turnbuckle is outfitted with two pins and two snap rings
  • The following tools are on my boat: flat-head screwdriver, Philips screwdriver, adjustable wrench and/or wrenches that fit turnbuckle nuts, vice-grip
  • Mast has been inspected and all stays are in place and kink-free
  • Spreaders are on board (with fastening screws and nuts)
  • 2 dock lines are fastened and ready for use at dock
  • 2 bumpers are hanging off either side of boat (note that water level is much higher than in fall)

Our club is near the foot of Dowling Avenue, on the water's edge between Argonaut Rowing Club and the Boulevard Club. To park, turn south onto Net Drive from Lake Shore.
