TS&CC Celestial Navigation Workshop - Dec. 9 & 10

Kurt Wege, a certified Celestial Navigation Instructor with years of classroom experience and strong on the water sailing and navigating expertise, will be leading a two day workshop for those interested in expanding their sailing skills!

When and Where?  December 9 & 10   9:00am - 5:00pm in the TS&CC Clubhouse

Description of Workshop:

To get a basic understanding of Celestial Navigation through history, theory and practical application of real sights and sight reductions, focusing on sun sights, through worksheets and plotting – to determine a position or fix using celestial bodies.

Workshop Content:

  • Why Celestial Navigation?
  • A bit of history
  • Some theory and background on how it works
  • Time – the importance of it
  • The Sextant – how to use it
  • Sun and Noon sights – how do they work
  • Taking actual sun sights on the water from shore (if no sun – have canned sights to work through)
  • Processing of Sight Reductions using Nautical Almanac and Sight Reduction Tables
  • Working with Worksheets and Plotting Sheets
  • Other sights – Moon and Planets, and an emphasis on Stars      
  • How to take sights on a boat, on shore, in your backyard or from your house
  • Other topics in brief – natural navigation, making landfall and a few other things

Our club is near the foot of Dowling Avenue, on the water's edge between Argonaut Rowing Club and the Boulevard Club. To park, turn south onto Net Drive from Lake Shore.
